Your annual SMSF audit, done properly and on time.
We audit self-managed super funds for trustees and accounting firms across Australia. You upload your documents through our secure portal and we do the rest, with a registered auditor checking every file personally.
Do the fund's financial statements fairly present its position and results?
Has the trustee complied with the key sections of the SIS Act and SIS Regulations?
For trustees
Every SMSF must be audited each year before its annual return is lodged. We make that step simple and explain anything we find in plain English.
See how it worksFor accountants
Send us your funds in bulk. We audit only, so we will never compete with you for your clients' accounting or tax work.
Partner with usIndependence you can rely on
Audits are run through a separate company, Achieve SMSF Audit Pty Ltd. We do not audit any fund where we or our related accounting practice prepared the financial statements or provide other services that would affect our independence.
About our auditorWhat we audit
An SMSF audit has two parts. We carry out both and issue the ATO's approved-form Independent Auditor's Report.
Financial audit
Carried out under Australian Auditing Standards. We check that the fund's financial statements are free from material misstatement.
- Bank balances and transactions
- Investment ownership and market valuations
- Contributions and benefit payments
- Income, expenses and tax
- Member balances and allocations
Compliance engagement
Carried out under ASAE 3100. We check the trustee's compliance with the SIS Act and Regulations the ATO requires us to report on.
- Sole purpose test
- In-house asset limits and related-party dealings
- Arm's-length transactions
- Separation of fund assets from personal assets
- Borrowing (LRBA) rules
- Pension minimums and contribution acceptance
Reporting and follow-up
If we find a contravention, we explain what it means and what to fix. Where the law requires it, we lodge an Auditor/Actuary Contravention Report (ACR) with the ATO and tell the trustees first.
- Management letter with findings
- Signed audit report for lodgement
- Plain-English follow-up for trustees
Funds we handle
Simple and complex funds, including:
- Accumulation and pension phase
- Listed shares and managed funds
- Term deposits and cash
- Residential and commercial property
- Limited recourse borrowing arrangements
- Business real property leased to related parties
- Unlisted trusts and private companies
- Cryptocurrency
- Collectables and other assets
From upload to signed report in five steps
Everything happens through our secure online portal. You won't need to post or email documents.
Register and appoint us
Create your login in the client portal and sign our engagement letter. The trustees appoint us as the fund's auditor.
Upload your documents
Upload the fund's financial statements and supporting documents. The portal shows you what's needed, and you can see what's been received.
We audit
Our registered auditor reviews the file against the Australian Auditing Standards and the SIS Act. If we need anything else, we'll ask through the portal.
Trustees sign representations
Once our work is complete, the trustees sign the trustee representation letter.
Receive your signed report
We issue the signed Independent Auditor's Report and a management letter. Your accountant can then lodge the SMSF annual return.
Documents we usually need
- Signed financial statements and member statements
- Trustee minutes and resolutions for the year
- Bank statements for the full year (1 July – 30 June)
- Investment holding statements at 30 June
- Contract notes for purchases and sales
- Property valuations, leases and rental statements
- Loan documents for any LRBA
- Pension documents and minimum payment calculations
- Contribution records and any notices of intent to claim
- Trust deed and any amendments (first audit, or if changed)
- Signed trustee declarations for new trustees
- Prior-year audit report (for a new auditor)

An audit partner that stays in its lane
We audit. We don't prepare accounts, lodge returns or give advice to the funds you send us, so your client relationship stays with you.
Bulk submissions
Upload several funds at once and track each one in the portal. See what's received, what's outstanding and what's complete.
One point of contact
Queries come from the auditor, not a call centre. We ask once, clearly, and give you time to answer.
Peak-season capacity
Tell us your lodgement schedule early and we'll plan around it, including your February and May peaks.
Findings, explained
Our management letters say what the issue is, which section it relates to and what fixes it, so you can act quickly.
Our independence commitment
We follow APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (including Independence Standards) and the ATO's auditor independence guidance. That means:
- We never audit a fund where we, or our related accounting practice Achieve Accounting, prepared the financial statements.
- We don't accept referrals that depend on reciprocal audit arrangements.
- We complete an independence check before each engagement.

Common questions
Does my SMSF need an audit every year?
Yes. Every SMSF must be audited by an ASIC-approved SMSF auditor each financial year before the fund's annual return is lodged with the ATO. This applies even if the fund had few or no transactions.
Can my accountant also audit my fund?
Not if they prepared the fund's financial statements. Independence rules stop an auditor from auditing their own work. That's why most funds use a separate auditor like us.
When should I appoint an auditor?
The law requires trustees to appoint an approved auditor no later than 45 days before the annual return is due. Appointing earlier gives everyone more time.
How long does the audit take?
Most audits are finished within 7 business days once we have all the documents. Complex funds or funds with outstanding queries may take longer.
What happens if you find a problem?
We'll explain it and discuss how to fix it. Some breaches must be reported to the ATO on a contravention report. If that applies, we'll tell you before we lodge it. Reporting is a legal obligation for auditors, and acting quickly usually leads to a better outcome with the ATO.
How do you check my auditor registration?
Search our SMSF Auditor Number (SAN) on the ASIC SMSF auditor register at asic.gov.au.
Is the portal secure?
Yes. The portal uses encrypted connections, and each trustee and accountant has their own login. Documents stay in the portal rather than in email inboxes.
